American eels are migratory fish found in the Hudson River that have captured the attention of hundreds of people in the Hudson Valley. The species is in decline over much of its range, but in the Hudson Valley a citizen science project involves many in scientific data collection. Join us as we embark on a journey starting the in Atlantic Ocean and ending in a stream in northern Westchester. As we learn about the life cycle of the American eel and the challenges eels face, you can decide if you find the eel as alluring as the rest of us.

Presenter Bio:
Marie Roche is an environmental educator and Hudson River enthusiast from Teatown Lake Reservation. Marie first learned about the American eel in 2013 when she was training to work for the Hudson River Sloop Clearwater. After a few years of sailing the Hudson River and Chesapeake Bay, she found herself at Teatown meeting with the NYSDEC educators to talk about eels. Through Teatown, Marie has coordinated a Hudson River Eel Project sampling site at Furnace Brook since 2017.
